What each statistic means

  • Mean: the sum divided by the count.
  • Median: the middle value of the sorted data (average of the two middle values when the count is even).
  • Mode: the most frequent value(s); “none” if every value appears once.
  • Standard deviation: the typical distance from the mean. Use sample (divide by n − 1) when your data is a sample of a bigger group, population (divide by n) when it’s the whole group.
  • Quartiles: Q1 and Q3 are the medians of the lower and upper halves (the median itself is excluded for odd counts). Other software may use slightly different quartile methods.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use sample or population?

Population if you measured every member of the group; sample if your data is a subset used to estimate the whole.
