How to find each

  1. Mean: add all values and divide by how many there are.
  2. Median: sort the values; take the middle one, or the average of the two middle ones.
  3. Mode: the value that appears most often. A set can have several modes or none.
  4. Range: largest minus smallest.

Example: 3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 4, 7, 5 → sorted 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 7, 7, 9. Mean 44 ÷ 8 = 5.5, median (5 + 7) ÷ 2 = 6, mode 7, range 7.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best average?

The median is better for skewed data (like incomes); the mean uses every value; the mode suits categories.
