About US fluid ounces and US cups
Volume units are everywhere in cooking, drinks, fuel and medicine. US recipes use cups, tablespoons and fluid ounces; most of the world uses millilitres and litres.
This converter changes US fluid ounces (fl oz) into US cups (cup) instantly. You can also type in the second box to convert backwards, or pick any other volume unit from the menus.

cup = fl oz ÷ 8
1 fl oz = 0.125 cup
1 cup = 8 fl oz
Both units are defined in litres: 1 US fluid ounces = 0.029573529562 litre, and 1 US cup = 0.2365882365 litre. Dividing one by the other gives the factor above.
Worked example
To convert 12 fl oz: 12 × 0.125 = 1.5 cup.
Notes and assumptions
Uses US customary units. A metric cup is 250 mL and a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 L, so results differ if your recipe or spec uses those.

- Take the value in US fluid ounces.
- Multiply it by 0.125.
- Round only at the end.
Common mistakes
- Mixing US and UK units. A UK pint (568 mL) is about 20% bigger than a US pint (473 mL).
- Treating fluid ounces (volume) and ounces (weight) as the same thing. They only match for water-like liquids.
- Using a metric cup (250 mL) recipe with a US cup (236.6 mL) measure. The gap is small but adds up in baking.
