MAP formula

MAP ≈ DBP + ⅓ × (SBP − DBP) MAP ≈ (2 × DBP + SBP) ÷ 3

The heart spends about two-thirds of each beat relaxing (diastole), so MAP is weighted toward the diastolic number. Example: 120/80 → 80 + 40 ÷ 3 = 93.3 mmHg.

What MAP tells you

MAP is the average pressure pushing blood through your organs during one heartbeat. A MAP of roughly 70–100 mmHg is commonly cited as typical. In hospitals, a MAP of at least 65 mmHg is a common target in septic shock (Surviving Sepsis Campaign) because lower values risk poor organ perfusion.

Pulse pressure

Pulse pressure is systolic minus diastolic. Around 40 mmHg is typical at rest; a persistently wide pulse pressure in older adults is associated with stiffer arteries.

Frequently asked questions
