Modern IQ tests are scaled so scores follow a normal distribution with mean 100 and standard deviation 15. The percentile is the share of the population scoring at or below your score.
Example: IQ 115 is one SD above the mean, the 84th percentile. IQ 130 is about the 98th percentile.
| IQ | Classification | Share of people |
|---|---|---|
| 130 + | Very superior | 2.2% |
| 120–129 | Superior | 6.7% |
| 110–119 | High average | 16.1% |
| 90–109 | Average | 50% |
| 80–89 | Low average | 16.1% |
| 70–79 | Borderline | 6.7% |
| 69 and below | Extremely low | 2.2% |
Some older tests use SD 16 (Stanford-Binet before 2003) or SD 24 (Cattell). A Cattell 148 equals a Wechsler 130. Always compare scores on the same scale.
About the 97.7th percentile on an SD-15 test.
