Formula
needed = (goal − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
w = final exam weight as a decimal (25% → 0.25)
Example: current 85%, goal 90%, final worth 25%: (90 − 85 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 63.75) ÷ 0.25 = 105%, so 90% isn’t reachable without extra credit. A goal of 85% needs 85% on the final.
Tips
- Use your current grade as your teacher calculates it (already weighted).
- If the final replaces a low test score, this formula doesn’t apply; check your syllabus.
