How to write a net ionic equation

  1. Write the molecular equation by swapping partners: AB + CD → AD + CB.
  2. Use solubility rules to mark each product (aq) or (s).
  3. Split every soluble ionic compound into ions (the complete ionic equation).
  4. Cancel spectator ions that appear unchanged on both sides.
  5. What’s left is the net ionic equation; balance charges and atoms.

Solubility rules used

  • Compounds of Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, NH₄⁺, and all nitrates and acetates, are soluble.
  • Chlorides, bromides and iodides are soluble except with Ag⁺ and Pb²⁺.
  • Sulfates are soluble except with Ba²⁺, Sr²⁺, Pb²⁺ (and Ca²⁺, Ag⁺ slightly).
  • Hydroxides are insoluble except with group 1 metals, NH₄⁺ and Ba²⁺ (Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺ slightly).
  • Carbonates, phosphates and sulfides are insoluble except with group 1 and NH₄⁺ (group 2 sulfides dissolve).

Frequently asked questions
