Multiply the bed’s area (sq ft) by the depth in feet (inches ÷ 12) to get cubic feet; divide by 27 for cubic yards. Bagged mulch is usually sold in 2 or 3 cubic foot bags. A depth of 2–3 inches is commonly recommended; keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and plant stems.
Example: 20 × 5 ft at 3 in → 100 × 0.25 = 25 ft³ = 0.93 yd³, or 13 bags of 2 ft³.
13.5 bags of 2 ft³, or 9 bags of 3 ft³.
