Why concentration is needed

Milligrams measure mass and milliliters measure volume, so there’s no single conversion; it depends on how much substance is dissolved in each milliliter. Labels often give concentration as “X mg per Y mL”: divide X by Y to get mg/mL. Example: 250 mg per 5 mL = 50 mg/mL, so 250 mg is 5 mL. For pure water, 1 mL weighs about 1,000 mg (1 g).

Frequently asked questions

How many mL is 5 mg?

It depends on concentration: at 1 mg/mL it’s 5 mL; at 5 mg/mL it’s 1 mL.
