About kilobytes (1000) and megabytes (1000²)

Data units describe file sizes, storage capacity, phone plans and download limits.

This converter changes kilobytes (1000) (KB) into megabytes (1000²) (MB) instantly. You can also type in the second box to convert backwards, or pick any other data unit from the menus.

Formula

MB = KB ÷ 1,000 1 KB = 0.001 MB 1 MB = 1,000 KB

Both units are defined in bytes: 1 kilobyte (1000) = 1,000 byte, and 1 megabyte (1000²) = 1,000,000 byte. Dividing one by the other gives the factor above.

Worked example

To convert 12 KB: 12 × 0.001 = 0.012 MB.

Notes and assumptions

KB, MB and GB here are decimal (1 KB = 1,000 bytes), as used by storage makers and networks. Operating systems often use binary units (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes); switch to KiB, MiB or GiB for those.

How to convert by hand

  1. Take the value in kilobytes (1000).
  2. Multiply it by 0.001.
  3. Round only at the end.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing decimal (1,000) and binary (1,024) units. This is why a “1 TB” drive shows about 931 GB on a computer.
  • Confusing bits (b) and bytes (B). Internet speeds are usually in megabits per second; 8 bits make a byte.
