About Fahrenheit and Celsius

Formula
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points as well as different degree sizes, so you multiply and then add an offset. 1 °C step equals 1.8 °F.
Worked example
To convert 25 °F: (25 − 32) × 5/9 = −3.889 °C.

How to convert by hand
- Start with your temperature.
- Subtract 32.
- Multiply by 5, then divide by 9.
Quick mental estimate: subtract 30 and halve it (70 °F ≈ 20 °C; exact 21.1 °C).
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the +32 offset. Doubling Celsius gets close but isn’t exact.
- Converting a temperature difference with the full formula. A change of 10 °C is a change of 18 °F, not 50 °F.
