Two ways to convert dog years

  • AVMA rule of thumb (cited by the American Kennel Club): the first year of a medium-sized dog ≈ 15 human years, year two ≈ 9 more, then about 5 human years per dog year.
  • UC San Diego epigenetic clock (2019): human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, based on DNA methylation in 104 Labrador Retrievers, so it may not fit other breeds.

The old “multiply by 7” rule overstates young dogs’ age and understates old dogs’. Source: AKC, How to Calculate Dog Years to Human Years.
